The Prime Minister has announced that she will be resigning as leader of the Conservative Party on 7 June 2019.
Theresa May has served our country, and our party, for the last three years with passion and determination, no one can fault her energy and commitment; and the Tory Reform Group thanks her for her huge personal sacrifice.
With her decision today, the Conservative Party now begins the process of choosing a new leader. In that leadership election, the TRG will be asking candidates to demonstrate how they would govern in a modern, progressive, One Nation tradition.
A new leader needs to reach beyond the core vote, and demonstrate how modern Conservatives values can deliver the policies we need to meet twenty-first century challenges.
Our next leader must deliver on the referendum, while demonstrating that that the Conservative Party is about more than Brexit. It is time to bring both the party and, more importantly, the country together.
It was clear that Theresa May was unfit to lead about 2 years ago. The Parliamentary party were at fault because instead of opposing her they should have removed her then. Because our MPs have been so weak the whole thing has become a crisis where the very existence of the Conservative Party is at risk. She behaved in the role of Prime Minister as she did in the Home Office. She failed to consult with her colleagues and went off an did her own thing. That is not the modern way to lead. I know that it is also unfashionable to hit a person when they are down but we should say it how it is. History will not be kind to her.
For the fist time in over 40 years I voted against the Conservatives at the European elections. I could not vote for a party with that woman in charge.
